That a mountain pass could not be more effectively cleared of snow was the general consensus among those invited to the recent Unimog demonstration clearance of the Grossglockner high alpine road on the 6th and 7th of April 2011. This spectacular show with its magnificent scenery was viewed by 400 guests from eight nations.

Each and every bit as unique as Austria's highest peak and symbol, this year marks the 60th birthday of the Mercedes-Benz Unimog, a synonym for high-performance at 2,506 meters, at sea level and at all levels in between! To prove this, 12 Unimogs from Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks, in collaboration with Kalbacher and the Pappas Group, demonstrated the latest snow clearance and milling technologies.

Such an enormous mass of snow necessitates a heavy vehicle and these were on hand. Modern sidewall cutters, side snow blowers, snow cutters as well as snow ploughs and spreader equipment in combination with the Unimog U 300 - U 500 range. One after another, the Unimogs made their way along the curving and at times steep mountain pass, which was in places buried in snow up to half of its width. Simple wooden posts sticking out of the snow were the only indication to the drivers and the watching spectators of where the road's edge lay.

Majestically, the Unimog demonstrated the stately abilities which are its renown; effectively translating the weight of the U 300 - U 500 range and by supplying a stream of continuous power to its quality high-performance power tools to bring all its might to bear on the intractable snow. At the conclusion of which, all were unanimous in their opinion that a more effective snow clearance was not possible.
